Mother drown to save her 3-year-old daughter in Hurricane Harvey

A mother who drowned during floods in Texas has been identified as Collette Sulcer.
The 41-year-old was swept away by the strong currents in the Texas floods while trying to carry her daughter Jordyn to safety.

Rescuers found little Jordyn alive, clinging to her mother's lifeless body.

According to reports, the tragedy happened when the 41-year-old got stuck in Beaumont as she tried to flee rising waters in her car caused by Tropical Storm Harvey.

Police said Collette tried desperately to keep her daughter’s head above water. When she was found half a mile away from the scene, Jordyn was still clinging to her mother's floating body.

Carol Riley, a spokesperson for the Beaumont Police Department, said she ‘absolutely saved the child’s life’.

She said: ‘They were in the water for quite some time. The mother did the best she could to keep her child up over the water.

‘The baby also had a backpack that was helping her float on her back and she was holding on to her mom.’

Officials have confirmed the death toll from Harvey has risen to 31, including six family members – four of them children – whose bodies were pulled on Wednesday from a van that had been swept off a Houston bridge into a bayou.
