White House facing scrutiny for Russia sanctions delay

Image
Top Senate Republicans are pledging to find out if the White House is intentionally delaying new sanctions on Moscow as the Trump administration is several weeks past a congressionally-imposed deadline to identify top Russian officials involved in political cybermeddling. "We're going to check into it," Republican Sen. Bob Corker, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told CNN Wednesday. "I will find out in the next 24 hours. I'm going to get on the phone with someone and find out." Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, said the administration is acting "as if they are unilateral." "We have to do what we need to assert our role," he told CNN. Corker and McCain are among Trump's fiercest Republican critics in Congress. The White House is under fire as the deadline to begin the process of slapping fresh sanctions on Russia passed three and a half weeks ago. Admini

US airstrikes in Yemen kill 9 ISIS militants

Image
The US military conducted two airstrikes targeting ISIS in Yemen on Wednesday, killing nine ISIS militants, according to US Central Command, which oversees US troops in the region. The two strikes hit ISIS vehicles and took place in al Bayda Governorate in Yemen. This is only the second time the US has targeted ISIS in Yemen with a series of strikes, suggesting US planners are increasingly concerned about the terror group's presence there. Military strikes there have historically targeted al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. "Ongoing US counter-terrorism operations against ISIS in the ungoverned spaces of Yemen continued today with two strikes, which killed nine terrorists," said US Army Maj. Josh Jacques, a Central Command spokesperson. The first strike successfully targeted seven armed ISIS fighters traveling in a truck in a rural area of al Bayda. The second strike killed two armed ISIS fighters in a parked truck located about five miles to the west of t

A must for ex-President Goodluck to appear in court Judge orders

Image
Former president Goodluck Jonathan was absent in court Wednesday to testify as witness in the corruption trial of  former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Olisa Metuh. The absence of former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki, also stalled the same proceedings at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The court had earlier granted the request of the accused, Metuh, asking that both men come and testify as witnesses. But the judge noted that though Dasuki had been served with the court subpoena, Jonathan had yet to be served, and so could not be blamed for HIS absence. Justice Okon Abang, has now given the court bailiff five days to serve the former President with the subpoena compelling him to appear in court. The court also wants the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to explore administrative means of ensuring that the Department of State Service produce Dasuki in court next Monday. The High Court has on Wednesday declared the appo

Protests continue in Kenya ahead Presidential rerun poll

Image
Thousands of protesters marched on Wednesday on the streets of the opposition stronghold of Kisumu as Kenya  plunged deeper into a political crisis after a vote delay petition went unheard. The Supreme Court says it could not hear a case to delay a presidential election because it lacked the judges to make a quorum. Chief Justice David Maraga said one judge was unwell, and another was abroad and unable to return in time. Yet, another judge was unable to come to court after her bodyguard was shot and injured Tuesday night. Meanwhile, only the Supreme Court has the authority to delay Thursday’s poll.

Catalan parliament considered declaring independence

Image
Many fear the session will become a cover for a vote on declaring independence from Spain. Catalan president Carles Puigdemont has asked the parliament to convene a debate and vote on how to respond to the central Spanish government’s plan, announced over the weekend, to take direct control of the northeastern region. Puigdemont’s speech on Saturday was seen as a veiled threat of formalizing an ambiguous declaration of independence earlier this month that he declared suspended in order to earn time for negotiations.

Ex-President Jonathan in trial trouble

Image
Nigeria's former president Goodluck Jonathan has been asked to testify at the corruption trial of his party's former spokesman, a court was told on Monday. Olisa Metuh is being tried on charges of having fraudulently received some 400 million naira ($1.1 million, 945,000 euros) from the then-national security advisor Sambo Dasuki. The money was allegedly used to fund Jonathan's failed re-election campaign for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015, which he lost to Muhammadu Buhari. Metuh's lawyer, Onyechi Ikpeazu, has already successfully applied for Dasuki to appear as a defence witness and said he would do the same for Jonathan. "The other witness we want to subpoena is Goodluck Jonathan, former president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria," he told the Federal High Court in Abuja. "We wrote him a letter but he did not respond and our plan will be to apply for subpoena after the first application (which compels Dasuki to appear as a wit

Effect of Smoking during Pregnancy 2

Image
How will smoking affect my baby? A shortage of oxygen can have devastating effects on your baby's growth and development. On average, smoking during pregnancy doubles the chances that a baby will be born too early or weigh less than 5 1/2 pounds at birth. Smoking also more than doubles the risk of stillbirth. Every cigarette you smoke increases the risks to your pregnancy. A few cigarettes a day are safer than a whole pack, but the difference isn't as great as you might think. A smoker's body is especially sensitive to the first doses of nicotine each day, and even just one or two cigarettes will significantly tighten blood vessels. That's why even a "light" habit can have an outsize effect on your baby's health. How smoking affects your baby: Weight and size On average, a pack-a-day habit during pregnancy will shave about a half-pound from a baby's birth weight. Smoking two packs a day throughout your pregnancy could make your baby a full

17 Southern Governors set to meet in Lagos

Image
Twelve years after their last gathering, Governors from the Southern part of Nigeria will on Monday converge on Lagos to deliberate  on how to forge stronger ties for the three geo-political zones. In a statement signed by the Secretary to the Lagos State Government (SSG), Mr Tunji Bello, the meeting which will be co-hosted by the Governors of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode and Akwa Ibom, Emmanuel Udom will address issues that are germane to the development of the three contiguous zones. Bello said the meeting is in line with the realisation that the different states in the South have since 2005 developed several areas of comparative advantage which could be harnessed and become mutually beneficial. According to him, the Governors would also be expected to adopt a common position on the issues of armed robbery, kidnapping, devolution of powers and issue of fiscal federalism which have all gained prominence of late. “The 2017 Lagos summit of the 17 Southern Governors represent

Effect of Smoking during Pregnancy 1

Image
Thousands of women with high-risk pregnancies realize their dreams of a healthy baby. But even after all those successes, there's still one situation that truly scares him: a pregnant woman who can't quit smoking. "Smoking cigarettes is probably the No. 1 cause of adverse outcomes for babies," says Welch, who's the chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Providence Hospital in Southfield, Michigan. He's seen the complications far too many times: babies born prematurely, babies born too small, babies who die before they can be born at all. In his view, pregnancies would be safer and babies would be healthier if pregnant smokers could somehow swap their habit for a serious disease such as diabetes or high blood pressure. "I can control those conditions with medications," Welch says. But when a pregnant woman smokes, he says, nothing can protect her baby from danger. Why is it so dangerous to smoke during pregnancy? Nigerian President hails media role in Turkey failed coup

Image
President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday in Ankara said the international media must be commended for their‘constructive coverage’ of the July 15, 2016 failed coup attempt in Turkey. Speaking at a meeting with the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, Ismail Kahraman, President Buhari hailed the courage of the people of Turkey for defending democracy in the aftermath of the unfortunate incident of July 15. ‘‘The international media helped the world in trying to understand what really happened (on July 15) and what the government is doing,’’ he said. Reiterating Nigeria’s solidarity with Turkey after the failed attempt to oust a democratically-elected government, the President said Turkey’s assumption of the Chairmanship of theD-8 from tomorrow, October 20, will afford both countries the opportunity to work together on economic, security and political issues. He told Turkey’s parliamentary leader, before flying to Istanbul for the ninth D-summit on Friday, that followi

Former U.S Presidents lash on Trump

Image
The Presidents club is turning on its newest member. Breaking the code of silence that retired commanders in chief normally maintain about their successors, both George W. Bush and Barack Obama delivered clear jabs at the current occupant of the Oval Office on Thursday. President Donald Trump, however, likely didn't feel a thing. His entire political brand stands as a living rebuke to the political establishment that both men once led and to the traditionalists who believe his behavior is eroding the prestige of the presidency itself. While neither Bush nor Obama mentioned Trump by name or referred to his claims this week that he had been more attentive to relatives of slain US service members than they were, they used coincidental events to register their alarm with Trump's politics. In New York, Bush delivered a strong indictment of Trump's populist nationalism, condemning trade protectionism and bemoaning how politics had fallen prey to "conspiracy t

Minister of Agriculture says Nigeria imported poverty

Image
It has been confirmed that Nigerians import poverty and unemployment through importation of foods and by creating more problems by consuming  what they do not produce in the country. The Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbe made this known in Abeokuta during the convocation lecture of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta. He noted the country is in serious need of the youths in agriculture to produce the right kind of foods which are in high demand in the country. He hinted that Nigeria is spending more than 22billion dollars every year on food importation. The minister who insisted that the most powerful legislative chamber in the world is the stomach, said the future of the country shall be determined by food production. He also projected that by year 2050 the population of the country will be 450 million and such huge population cannot survive on importation of foods. He urged the nutrition department of the University to come up with researches that will ass
